Bring Your Camera Along to Capture the Punta Borinquen Lighthouse

If you travel to the coast of Puerto Rico you will probably end up at a great coastal city called Aguadilla. The city is home to several noteworthy attractions that will keep you entertained for the day. One of these is the Punta Borinquen Lighthouse – an amazing and aged structure which makes for great photographs. So if you plan to visit the Punta Borinquen Lighthouse in Puerto Rico, make sure that you pack your camera and plan to be there when natural lighting is most likely to add a dramatic effect to your camera work.

The Punta Borinquen Lighthouse is located in the old Ramey Air Force Base on Aguadilla’s coastline. The original lighthouse was built in 1889. It features a rather typical design with the base of the lighthouse being rectangular in shape. It is clear to see from the remains that the circular lighthouse tower once rose up through the middle of the building to project its bright light and warn ships of impending coastal dangers. It was one of several lighthouses on the island that employed this design. Unfortunately this lighthouse was destroyed by a tsunami in 1918 and so very little of it remains. The façade is still mostly intact, but the rest of the building has been washed away to almost ground level. You can still get a strong sense of the basic design of the original building and it is interesting to see just how strong the power of water is and how well parts of this man-made structure survived something for which it wasn’t designed. In fact the lighthouse has been lashed by hurricanes and other natural disasters over the years, so it is doing exceptionally well. Most likely it was placed a bit further inland when it was originally built. The historical site has been designated for preservation by the National Register of Historic Places and it is here that you will get some really pretty pictures.

If you wish to see the new Punta Borinquen Lighthouse, you will find that it not too far away. The new keeper’s house is also rectangular in shape but unlike its predecessor it is still very much intact. It is divided into two apartments – one of which is rented out to military personal as a vacation apartment and the other which serves as the keeper’s home. The lighthouse itself is not a separate tower but adjoins the keeper’s house.
