Live Performances at Luis A. Ferre Center in San Juan

If you are a theatre buff then you simply have to catch a few performances at the Luis A. Ferrè Performing Arts Center in Puerto Rico. Also known as the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferrè (CBA), the center is designed for multiple use and it features three main halls where various performing arts can be enjoyed by the general public. The center is located in Ponce de León Ave in Santurce, San Juan, and it regularly holds concerts and theatrical performances such as ballets, plays and operas. It was originally opened in 1981 after ten long years of careful planning, financing and construction. In 1994 it was renamed after the famous local politician and philanthropist Luis A. Ferrè.

Ever since it was opened the center has become an integral part of the performing arts community. It not only caters to various spheres of performing arts but also serves as a display center for cultural presentations in the San Juan area. In the past it has seen the likes of a number of internationally renowned stars, such as Plácido Domingo, take to the stage and these performances have been received with much enthusiasm by the people of Puerto Rico. The building itself is an award-winning piece of architecture that inspires creativity. Inside you will find the Carlos Marichal Experimental Theatre which features 210 seats arranged in a semi-circular pattern around the stage. The theatre is mainly used for intimate chamber music performances and the small size means that you can truly appreciate the music that is being played. The Rene Marques Theatre is a more formal and larger theatre with 748 seats. The theatre is used for full dramatic staging and is often booked out. The Antonio Paoli Festival Hall is even larger with 1883 seat and space for an orchestra. In fact, this hall is home to the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra which regularly holds performances at the venue.

The various halls are often used to accommodate dance and theatre groups of both local and international standing and the center serves as home to the annual Casals Festival. Also worth mentioning is the small stage at the Café Teatro Sylvia Rexach where stand up comedians and other performing artists and jazz musicians regularly entertain diners. So make sure that you don’t miss out on this excellent venue and catch at least one show at the Luis A. Ferrè Performing Arts Center.
