Globe Trekker - Puerto Rico with Zay Harding [48:19]
Located at the heart of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is around 100 miles long by 30 miles wide, with a population of some 4 million. Part of the US Commonwealth, it's known as the "island of enchantment", boasting sun-kissed beaches, dramatic mountains, a rich colonial history, and great music. Starting his journey in Puerto Rico's vibrant capital, San Juan, host Zay Harding looks around the beautifully preserved old city, dating back to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Sampling the local cuisine and the fabulous national drink, the piña colada, he salsas the night away before getting to meet the man who rolled the world's longest cigar. From San Juan, Zay heads east to El Yunque National Forest, one of the best preserved rainforests in the Caribbean. Home to over 240 species of trees, and a lot of rare wildlife, it's the last refuge of the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot. Checking out the breeding project that aims to save these beautiful birds, Zay is reassured that the future of the species is in good hands. From El Yunque, Zay leaves the main island of Puerto Rico to catch a ferry to the small island of Vieques, which is blessed with a spectacular coastline. During WWII, the US military used the island as a weapons test site, and Zay discovers how the island's glorious beaches are now being decontaminated and opened to public access for the first time since the war. Vieques , and San Juan Puerto-Rico december 1985. US-French Combined Exercice. [12:13]
The US Marines detachment UNITAS XXVI / WATC. 85 and the French 33. Regiment d'Infanterie de Marine, based in Martinique, organised a combined exercice on Vieques Island , december 1985, with the USS Saginaw and the French Navy ship Francis Garnier. And the French soldiers got 2 days leave to visit San Juan before their return to Fort-de-France. This short movie was made with a small Super 8 camera and Kodachrome film.

Travel San Juan, Puerto Rico: Riding tourist trolley through town [04:10]
I started the morning off early with a walk through the extensive grounds of the Embassy Suites / Golden Sands resort in Dorado, and around mid-day we made our way into the Puerto Rican capital -- San Juan. Old San Juan is a beautifully restored colonial city and was founded in 1521. We parked our vehicle close to the Puerto Rican Capitol and started walking west towards Old San Juan past Plaza Colon which features a statue of Christopher Columbus. After my initial explorations of the popular shopping street Calle Fortaleza I discovered the Governor's Mansion (la Fortaleza) where two local policemen enlightened me about the significance of this building. Then I came across the Parque de las Palomas where hundreds of pigeons swarm the tourists who feed them. Walking north I explored the Atlantic waterfront, the Old San Juan Cemetery and one of San Juan's most imposing fortifications: Fort San Felipe del Morro, begun in 1539, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I even hopped on the free open-air tourist trolley to get a more comprehensive view of Old San Juan and caught a nice sunset, looking south over the Bay of San Juan.
