Located at the heart of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is around 100 miles long by 30 miles wide, with a population of some 4 million. Part of the US Commonwealth, it's known as the "island of enchantment", boasting sun-kissed beaches, dramatic mountains, a rich colonial history, and great music. Starting his journey in Puerto Rico's vibrant capital, San Juan, host Zay Harding looks around the beautifully preserved old city, dating back to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Sampling the local cuisine and the fabulous national drink, the piña colada, he salsas the night away before getting to meet the man who rolled the world's longest cigar. From San Juan, Zay heads east to El Yunque National Forest, one of the best preserved rainforests in the Caribbean. Home to over 240 species of trees, and a lot of rare wildlife, it's the last refuge of the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot. Checking out the breeding project that aims to save these beautiful birds, Zay is reassured that the future of the species is in good hands. From El Yunque, Zay leaves the main island of Puerto Rico to catch a ferry to the small island of Vieques, which is blessed with a spectacular coastline. During WWII, the US military used the island as a weapons test site, and Zay discovers how the island's glorious beaches are now being decontaminated and opened to public access for the first time since the war. Sale $350000 OBO sarmiento realty 7875984024 Our last few hours in Puerto Rico had arrived. We left Dorado and took coastal Highway 165 again for a pleasant stress-free drive into San Juan. We had just about two hours before we had to return our vehicle at the airport and decided to visit another couple of areas in San Juan that we had not seen before. We drove through an area called "El Condado" which is a busy ocean-front community with many high-rise hotels, somewhat reminiscent of Fort Lauderdale or Miami Beach. We then drove further east to another San Juan district called "Isla Verde", a beachfront suburb that also features many condominiums and some highrise hotels. After returning our rental car we were ready to check in our luggage when the US Airways representative informed us that our flight to Philadelphia was cancelled due to the winter storm that had been blanketing the northeastern US and Canada. Fortunately he found a flight to Charlotte, NC, that would connect us with our destination of Buffalo after all. We had to race to the plane as everybody was already boarding. We finally arrived at about 10:30 pm in Buffalo, and not surprisingly were greeted by a continuing snowfall. Our car was buried under several inches of snow and after finally finding a gas station in Buffalo we crossed the border into Ontario at midnight.
