Just south of Arecibo we started to drive south on Highway 10 to cross the islands main mountain range, the "Cordillera Central", in order to reach the island's south coast. Although the island is only 35 miles (about 50 km) wide, it can take hours to cross the island, especially after the main highway ends. One of the things I love about travel is to discover local places that are not necessarily frequented by tourists. We started the day by driving west from Dorado into the coastal town of Arecibo which was settled in 1556. Caught in a downpour, we watched the goings-on on the main square ducked underneath a balcony.
