Family Fun at Aguadilla Ice Skating Arena
The city of Aguadilla is located on the north-western tip of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, with the Atlantic Ocean bordering it to the north and the west. Located along the beachfront of the city, the Aguadilla Ice Skating Arena, which is owned and run by the City of Aguadilla, is believed to be the only permanent ice skating facility in the Caribbean region that remains open throughout the year.
The Aguadilla Ice Skating Arena was opened in 2005 and is a multi-purpose facility, with the first floor being occupied by the ice skating rink, two fast-food restaurants, a retail sport shop, an arcade and a conference room. The second floor is home to a boxing club, a music room for the city band and a health and fitness area for women.
The Puerto Rican Figure Skating Federation (PRFSF) is involved in a program with the local schools in Aguadilla to allow school students to participate in their Learn to Skate program as part of their Physical Education curriculum. This is a concept already in place at schools in the United States. To achieve their objective, the Puerto Rican Figure Skating Federation provides school authorities, children and parents with information on the importance of combining academic subjects and athletics, as well as the benefits that students derive from this. The Learn to Skate program offers talented young people the opportunity to work towards becoming part of the international arena of figure skating.
The Learn to Skate program starts with a basic skills program which has been designed by U.S. Figure Skating and, although it is challenging, it is also rewarding and a lot of fun. The program is designed to keep skaters motivated from the time they first put their skates on right through to achieving their goals – whatever they may be. The basic skills program covers a number of facets of skating including free skate, synchronized skating, choreography and hockey. The Aguadilla Ice Skating Arena is open every day of the week and students therefore have access to the ice rink for practice sessions.
Apart from providing a venue for the PRFSF and its Lean to Skate program, the Aguadilla Ice Skating Arena is an ideal venue for families to spend some leisure time together and provides welcome relief from the summer heat. There are also various events held on the ice rink such as the very popular evening discos on ice.
Visitors to the Puerto Rican seaside city of Aguadilla should take time to visit the Aguadilla Ice Skating Arena and have some fun. They may just find themselves sharing the ice with some future Olympic figure skating champions.
