Top Hotel Brands Make Their Mark in Puerto Rico
With its popularity as a tourist destination growing continually, Puerto Rico has attracted a number of world-class hotel brands to serve both the holiday makers that visit this lovely country, as well as those who travel to Puerto Rico for business reasons. Puerto Rico’s authorities are working along with hotel developers to increase the island’s hotel inventory and have named Regent, St. Regis, JW Marriott and Starwood Hotels as some of the top brands showing an interest in establishing hotels in the country.
The Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan opened in November 2005 and has been successfully hosting conventions and events in its state-of-the-art facilities. With the success of this venture, the need for accommodation has grown and the Puerto Rico Convention Center District Authority recently announced plans to build a new “hotel zone” within the Convention Center development. The Sheraton Hotel group is well on its way with a development in the new hotel zone, and the Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel and Casino is scheduled to open its doors for business in November 2009.
The new Sheraton development will feature conference centers, two ballrooms, one of which can be easily converted into smaller rooms as required for various events. Additionally, the 503-room, 22-suite hotel will have a series of smaller meeting rooms, each ensuring the privacy of the business people who will be using them. A four-story high outdoor sundeck will offer guests panoramic views right from Condado through to the Bay of San Juan. Other features of the hotel include a large infinity swimming pool, complete with outdoor function space and poolside cabanas, a health spa and fitness center, as well as a variety of restaurants, retail shops and a casino. The building has the distinction of being the first “green” building to be constructed in the Caribbean according to environmentally friendly specifications set out by the U.S. Green Buildings Council, with a view to obtaining its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
Two additional hotels are in the planning stage for the Convention Center, namely the 250-room Marriott Courtyard Convention District Hotel and the 252-room Aloft Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel. While the facilities are aimed at providing the perfect setting for business dealings, it also aims to welcome guests that are holiday makers. So whether you are an individual business traveler, organizing a large business conference, a cruise passenger, or sun-seeker, the Puerto Rico Convention Center will have exactly what you need.
Other exciting developments either underway or in the pipeline for Puerto Rico include the five-star St. Regis Resort at Bahia Beach; the JW Marriott Hotel and Resort at Coco Beach; the Mandarin Oriental luxury hotel development in Humacao; the W Retreat & Spa on Vieques Island and the Rio Mar Beach & Resort in Rio Grande.
