SMS and Cellphones in Puerto Rico
If you’re planning a trip to Puerto Rico, there is no reason you should give up all hopes of using a cellular phone. In Puerto Rico SMS is every bit as popular as it is any many other countries around the globe. Add to this the country's relations with the United States and you will find that Puerto Rico has a well developed cellular communications system with thousands of users who make use of this service on a daily basis.
Puerto Rico is home to at last five different cellular phone networks. These are Claro (formerly Verizon Wireless), Centennial and Sprint PCS. You may also be able to gain access to cellular services through the Puerto Rico Telephone Company (PRTC) and AT&T Wireless (formerly Cingular and Cellular One Puerto Rico). Most of the existing cellular networks feature the latest models of cellular phone and offer a variety of payment plans. These include contracts and ‘pay as you go’ options.
Because the country already caters to a number of cellular networks, you will find that there are a number of cellular phone towers that dot the country and allow for a higher level of reception. If you have international roaming on your cell phone, we recommend that you bring it with you as you will certainly be able to use it. If you do not have this feature and do not wish to get it, you may be able to hire a cell phone for the duration of your trip. Whatever you choose, we hope that you enjoy your trip to Puerto Rico!
