  • Petition from Optometrists in the Unites States Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

How a government can preach for statehood if they ignore the petition of a healthcare profession that only wants to provide to their patients the same high standard of care that the rest of the 50 United States and federal dependencies enjoy?

For more than 15 years, optometrists in the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico had requested to the government a change in their practice law unsuccessfully. Now the situation is so precarious that the federal government, specifically the Medical Services Corps in the different braches of the Armed Forces and Uniformed Services, was force to reject optometry licenses granted in Puerto Rico because they are severely restricted and backward. The government of Puerto Rico asks for equality as the 51st state of the Union, but is not willing to go so far as to allow the same ocular healthcare that enjoys all in the United States of America to their own residents.

The U.S. Congress is aware of this issue and the disparity of a Puerto Rico government asking for statehood, but is unwilling or ambivalent to provide to their residents the same high standard of healthcare that the rest of the United States of America enjoy.
