  • hotels in San Juan

    Hi
What can you tell me about staying in el condado area in SJ?
    What about the following hotels?
    Radison, Ramada, Regency?

The Condado area is in a terrible condition since three of the mayor hotels (ran by the government!) are closed and no lighting in that area. The only good hotels there are the Marriott and the Condado plaza, the beach is not so wonderfull in that area and there are no near plans of renovations.

Hi -- We are booked into the Condado Plaza for last 2 days/1 night of vacation. got a relatively good rate for the area (excepting the absolutely obscene 22% tax!!). Given your comments above, do we want to stay there? or should we spring for Isla Verde, which I hear has a nice beach, but is more expensive? We do want decent beach for this last day, but do not have time to travel to Fajardo or other locale for that night (however, we are staying at the Lazy Parrot in Rincon for two nights at the beginning of our trip!). Also, do you know anything about the Colonial/Colony in Isla Verde which just underwent an ownership change?
      appreciate any suggestions you have.
      thanks.

Rincón is a dream, gorgeous beaches, nice people and great food, dont tell anybody! Isla Verde has also great beaches in the El San Juan , The Grand area and Im sure you can get comparable prices as the Condado Plaza since I believe is run by the same people as the fabulous El San Juan. Now you must visit Old San Juan, the most beautiful city in the caribbean! When in old San Juan have a meal at La Mayorquina, the oldest restaurant in Puerto Rico also try to get a copy of "the Que Pasa" magazine, distributed free by the Puertorican convention bureau. Have a great time!

Hi -- thanks for the reply, but do I read your comments correctly that you do not recommend staying in Condado no matter what? Not to give you more info than necessary, but our rate for the Condado Plaza is only $180 + tax--wasn't able to get even close at the Grand ($280 minimum), and I believe the ESJ was booked. (Though I sort of planned on calling them again prior to leaving, just in case.)

Glad to hear our instincts on Rincon were good. If you can help further with the Condado vs Isla Verde question, that would be great. Thanks.

You know that you can fly direct to Aguadilla or Mayagues which are half an hour to Rincon!
Well, The Condado Plaza is ok, large hotel, nice rooms and the price is ok for the season. There is a small public beach adjacent to the hotel that you can swim in. Now they just reopened the Caribe Hilton Hotel in the other side of dos hermanos bridge and they are doing a great job and there is also a decent beach. Obviously a good beach means a lot to me when on holiday! The only other hotel I can recommend in Condado is the Marriott (good casino!) and then maybe the Ambassador plaza (2 months ago they had union problems). I do love the El San Juan and the beach there is calm and expansive, I believe 4 or 5 miles of swimmable nice beach.E-mail quepasa@casiano.com for them to send you the great Que pasa guide free. They are quite helpfull! Have a great time! Let me clarify that the area in Condado that is a disaster is the Ashford Avenue in the section where the Condado Beach, Convention Center and La Concha Hotel area which was run to the ground by the government. Rude employees and service, you would confirm a specific room in writing and when you got there they would tell you, oh I just gave away your room to airline personel! This was the start of your holiday, fighting at the managers office to get your room back! I saw so many people go through this and it was always the same employee, maybe he was extorting money from the tourists. But the hotels I mention are well run, youll have a great time! And the Condado area is full of expensive, fancy condos. I recomend two restaurants in Condado, Ramiros and José-José in Magdalena ave. somewhat pricy but excellent. The Colonial Hotel sounds ok, dont know it. Bye now! Ill be there in February 27, cant wait!

Hi -- thanks for all the info. The only thing you haven't told me is where do YOU stay when you're there? You seem to know alot about the area. Fact that I can't find anything about the Colonial/Colony contains a message, I think. The beach is very important to me too as you can tell. Simply cannot justify the cost of el san juan (I hear the rooms are very small, and you have to tender to the beach...?), but if I can get something at the Grand within range of the Condado, we'll move. I have heard good things about the Grand. Beach at Isla Verde sounds far superior to Condado... last night of vacation is no time to scrimp. We'll be depressed as it is... :-)
We will be there the 27th too, but we'll be in Rincon; sail from SJ night of 28th, then back to SJ for Friday. I know we can fly to Rincon area, but we not only don't want to spend the money, we want to see as much of the island as possible, which we will not get if we fly. We know driving can be a hassle; we'll just have to deal with it (can't be a too much worse than what we deal with here). Are we crazy? perhaps. ;-)
thanks again. if you think of anything further that might be helpful, please write again. Have a great trip either way!
