Modest income... have you thought about MEXICO???

[i]You see, Puerto Ricans are not that laid back as far as REAL ESTATE prices are concerned, and ALL the cheap and BEATIFUL places are taken. Empty lots in towns such as Cabo Rojo, Aibonito, Aguadilla, Aguas Buenas, etc, are all taken already. There are still some places, but plan to look for them for a long time.

20 years ago there were far away towns in Puerto Rico hard to get to and from which no one would commute to work, but nowadays most places in Puerto Rico are connected via large toll roads and such. So, lots of folks are commuting an hour a day just to live out of the crowded cities and away from crime... Anyway, nowadays crime is everywhere in Puerto Rico, particularly with the new pro-Fidel Castro governor ruling the Island
(crime has just shot up by 35% since the start of her tenure in January 2001 ...)[b].

Towns I would recommend for you to look into: Moca, Maricao, Las Marias, Utuado, Orocovis, Lares, Adjuntas, Jayuya, Ciales, Coamo and perhaps, Barranquitas.
