    Caparra

    In 1508, Ponce de Leon, the first governor of Puerto Rico, founded a settlement named Caparra. It was known amongst Spanish settlers as “La Ciudad de Puerto Rico” (meaning the city of Puerto Rico), as it was the first European settlement and the first capital on the island.

    Caguas

    When Caguas was first founded in 1775, it was called San Sebastián del Piñal de Caguax after Caguax, a local Indian chief. Today, Caguas is referred to by a number of names, which includes La Ciudad Del Turabo (Turabo city), El Corazón de boriquén (Boriquén's heart) and La Ciudad Criolla (Criole city). Caguas has a population of about 140, 500 people.

    Utuado was established on 12 October 1739. It was founded by Sebastian de Morfi and the name of the city was derived from Chief Otoao, whose name meant “Between Mountains”.
