What is Cueva Del Indio?

Cueva del Indio is a seaside cave located on the coast of Arecibo.

It’s one of the most important archeological sites in Puerto Rico, as it contains dozens of petroglyphs carved by the Taíno, the pre-colonial inhabitants of the island.

In the area, you’ll also find the Seven Arches, seven rock formations along the coast. It’s said, one of them is similar to an Indian’s face.

When the tide allows it, snorkeling experts can also border the rock formations and see the cave from the outside. However, this requires plenty of experience.

La Cueva del Indio is both a nature reserve and a marine reserve.

However, Cueva del Indio in Arecibo shouldn’t be confused with Cueva del Indio in Las Piedras. The latter is also a cave with petroglyphs and forms part of the National Register of Historic Places.

What does “Cueva Del Indio” mean in English?

Cueva del Indio is usually translated as “The Indian’s Cave” or “Cave of the Indian”, and its name refers to the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico, the Taíno.

When the Spaniards arrived at the American continent, they named the natives Indios (Indians), since they believed they had arrived at the East Indies. 

Up to today, the Taíno are referred to as Indians, and so, the name of the cave is “the Indian’s cave” in Spanish.

There is an available parking lot with a fee of less than $10 per person. 

If you rather save money, you can park on the roadside of PR-681 and access Cueva del Indio through the beach. Just make sure your car isn’t blocking the main road, and don’t leave anything of value in your car.
