What are the Caguas Botanical Gardens?

The Caguas Botanical Gardens are botanical and cultural gardens famously known for their rich history and natural beauty.

They cover 60 acres and are built on the grounds of what used to be a sugar mill!

Caguas Botanical Gardens is a must see for anyone that loves botany and wants to learn about the plants native to Puerto Rico.

This park’s purpose is to educate and provide value to the visitors on tropical agriculture and Puerto Rican culture.

It offers many paths with gorgeous scenery, even a path that leads you to the remains of the sugar mill.

These gardens are full of all sorts of plants, including tropical and endemic plants. 

Not to mention the activities they offer, like riding on pedal boats in the lake for a few dollars and horseback riding for kids to enjoy for free.

This garden opened in April of 2007 and was renamed after the much-loved mayor of Caguas: William Miranda Marín Botanical & Cultural Garden.

The entrance fee is around $10 with discounted options for kids. 

Guided tours are available at an additional cost, and if you want an English-guided tour, you’ll need to call in advance. 

No outside foods or drinks are permitted inside the gardens. Luckily there are restaurants, food stands, and restrooms inside. 

Expect to spend at least 2 hours here.

What is the best way to get there?

The best way to get to the Caguas Botanical Gardens is by rental car or Uber.

Drive south on Highway 18 when you leave San Juan, and you will see this sign for Highway 52. Take exit #18 for the Caguas Botanical Gardens.

When driving, you’ll want to take Route 18 south to Route 52 south from San Juan to Caguas. 

Get off at exit #18 towards Aguas Buenas. Once you get off the exit ramp, you’ll want to hop onto Road 196.

Drive straight ahead, and you’ll see the garden right in front of you.
