These museums compile the world’s histories, memories and cultures in beautiful buildings and sites.
Discovering museums is one of my favorite things to do on the island.
In this article, I will cover the 12 best museums in Puerto Rico:
MAPR is the leading art museum on the island, showcasing, in 21 permanent exhibitions, the island’s top paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The museum also houses three temporary international exhibitions.
MAPR artworks range from the 17th century to the present. The permanent exhibitions cover 220 art pieces from 150 local artists.

MADMi highlights the architectural and stylistic transformations of the 20th century and its effects on the lives of the middle class in Puerto Rico.
Mixing illustrations and household artifacts, MADMi has charmed visitors with its simplicity, style and functionality.

Museo del Deporte celebrates, remembers, and showcases the equipment, trophies, and mementos of the island’s elite players.
The museum has a temporary exhibition on baseball legend Roberto Clemente filled with memorabilia from the Clemente Museum in Pittsburgh and the Roberto Clemente Foundation.

Museo del Niño is a STEM-oriented museum designed for children and families to enjoy together.
Museo del Niño has two floors of indoor interactive play and learning exhibits. Outside, beautiful grounds for outdoor adventures. Including, Go-Karts, riverboat rides, and a petting zoo.

Museo Castillo Serrallés invites visitors into the home and grounds (2.5 acres!) of the illustrious Serrallés family, founders of the Destilería Serrallés, known for its DonQ rum.
This 1930s mansion preserves the family’s original furniture, machines, and decor, with new external additions like the butterfly and Japanese garden.

Built in 1521 for Juan Ponce de León, the first governor of Puerto Rico (and fountain of youth seekers), Casa Blanca is the oldest standing residence on the island.
Casa Blanca provides an intimate look into the lives of Juan Ponce de Leon’s family and over 500 years of history, strife, and change in Old San Juan.

Museo el Cemí is an archeological history museum dedicated to the native Taíno people.
The museum’s distinct form represents the cemí, a Taíno deity. Inside, guests will see a vast collection of Taíno artifacts and learn more about the history of the Taíno people of Puerto Rico.

Museo de las Américas is a history museum that offers a multidisciplinary and multicultural crash course of the Americas, emphasizing Puerto Rico.
The museum has four permanent exhibitions exploring topics on art, African heritage, native influences, conquest, colonization, and societal evolution.
Museo de las Américas is located in the Cuartel del Ballajá, an 1800s army barrack, in Old San Juan (C. Beneficencia, San Juan, 00926).

Museo del Mar is a small maritime museum showcasing vintage nautical instruments, artifacts, documents, and model ships.
This hidden gem houses an interesting and beautiful collection of equipment. In fact, Museo del Mar has the largest life vest collection in the world.

Fortín Conde de Mirasol encompasses the complete history of Vieques, from the Taínos to the Spanish conquest to its service as a US Navy base.
The Fortín (1845) is the last Spanish fort built in the Americas. Today, it serves as a reminder of Vieques‘ history and development.

Parque de Bombas is a museum dedicated to the first fire station on the island.
Since its construction in 1882, Parque de Bombas has served as an important Puerto Rican landmark. The museum preserves the original firetruck, equipment, and decor of the once-running 19th-century firehouse.

The MHAA explores the art and anthropology of the Antilles through the visual arts and artifacts.
MHAA is the first legally established museum on the island and is celebrated for having one of the most diverse collections of Antillean works in the Caribbean.
