The Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is a famous graveyard in Old San Juan.

Located next to El Morro, the cemetery is the final resting place for many important Puerto Rican figures. 

As a frequent visitor myself, this is one of my favorite hidden gems in the city.

What is the Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery?

The Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is a graveyard located outside Old San Juan’s walls, between Castillo San Felipe del Morro and La Perla neighborhood.

The cemetery faces the Atlantic Ocean.

The Spanish colonial government started its construction in 1863. 

Considered one of the most beautiful in Puerto Rico and the world, this cemetery was built facing the Atlantic Ocean as a symbol of the journey of souls to the afterlife.

The Santa Magdalena De Pazzis Cemetery is located outside the walls of Old San Juan, between Castillo San Felipe del Morro and La Perla neighborhood.

Is it worth visiting?

The Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is worth visiting in Old San Juan.

Culture and history enthusiasts will find the graves of famous Puerto Rican artists, politicians, musicians, and painters. 

Some of the most notable figures are Pedro Albizu Campos, Ricardo Alegría, and José de Diego.

Flags and sculptures decorate the tombs of important politicians.

But, even if you aren’t interested in history, the religious sculptures in this cemetery along with the landscape are a true work of art. 

It’s also a great place to rest from the tourist crowds in the city. If you’re planning on visiting the cemetery, it’s open daily from 7 am to 3 pm.

 

What else can you do nearby?

Nearby the Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery you can visit El Morro and the San Cristobal Castle. 

The Spanish Empire created these two fortresses hundreds of years ago to protect Old San Juan from attacks.

Nearby museums include Las Americas Museum, the San Juan Museum, and Museo del Mar.

Some of the best places to grab food or drinks a short walk from Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery are La Perla, La Vergüenza, La Factoria, Don Ruiz, and Barrachina. 

Other Old San Juan landmarks within walking distance include Cuartel Ballaja, La Fortaleza, and El Capitolio.

Beach enthusiasts will find a Playa Peña, also known as Playa del Capitolio, within a 15-minute walk of the Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery.

Final thoughts

The Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is one of the best sites to visit in Old San Juan. 

Although it’s the final resting place of many important Puerto Rican figures, if you’re not into history, you can still enjoy the cemetery like a calming outdoor sculpture garden.

It’s one of my favorite places to escape the afternoon Old San Juan crowds, but you’ll love it regardless of the time you visit.
