Welcome to Toro Negro Forestry Reserve
Come and experience one of fourteen forest reserves on the island of Puerto Rico - the Toro Negro Forestry Reserve or Black Bull Forest Reserve. The reserve has a number of hiking trails you can use for long restful walks with your loved ones. The Toro Negro Forestry Reserve covers an area of 7000ac/2834ha of land and includes Puerto Rico's highest peak within its boundaries.
Wouldn't you like to go to the highest point of Cerro Punto for a breathtaking view of Toro Negro Forestry Reserve? Of course you would because the view would be absolutely stunning! It is interesting to note that in the past, most of the land was cultivated for coffee growing. This changed in the 1930s when reforestation was begun. Hence, the forest consists mostly of second or third growth woods.
You may choose to bring your binoculars with you. However, that may not be necessary as there are only 30 recorded bird species in this region. The endangered Puerto Rican Parrot is so rare that you are not likely to see one. But this does not mean that your trip will be a waste of time. The Toro Negro Forestry Reserve offers a number of exciting creatures to discover. For instance there are more than 20 different types of frogs including the endangered and unique coqui's. These tiny tree frogs will treat you to a delightful serenade every evening. There are also reptiles and eight species of bat to be found in the Black Bull Forest Reserve. There are also no venomous snakes to fear. Despite the fact that they are man-made, the lakes are absolutely beautiful and are well stocked with largemouth and peacock bass for those who enjoy fishing. The waters of the river are also quite clean in the upper regions of the reserve.
Though there are no camping facilities in the Toro Negro Forestry Reserve, camping is an excellent way to enjoy the wonders of nature. Here you can camp in the forest completely surrounded by nature. However you'll still have to get your free permit to do this legally. If you would like to explore the beauty and splendor of the reserve, there maps of the various hiking trails are available. The trails in the forest are well maintained and it would be wise to stay away from the roads. So come and visit the Toro Negro Forestry Reserve for those special memories and unforgettable wildlife adventures.
