The Beautiful Guilarte Forest Reserve

The Guilarte Forest Reserve is located in the Cordillera Central region. It is one of the most beautiful reserves in Puerto Rico and features dense tropical forests and a spectacular range of tree species. In fact, there are approximately 100 different species of trees in this small area. The Cordillera Central is a large range of mountains that dominates the skies in the Guilarte State Forest Reserve, Carite Forest, Susua State Forest, Maricao Forest, Lago Lucchetti Wildlife Refuge and the Toro Negro Forest. From these mountains visitors are often able to see San Juan and Ponce. They are also rewarded with panoramic views of the Guilarte Forest Reserve.

The seven sections of the Guilarte State Forest Reserve fall within the municipal areas of Yauco, Adjuntas, Penuelas and Guayanilla and therefore visitors will be able to gain access to the reserve easily from different places. The breathtaking Monte Guilarte is one of the three largest mountains on the island and stands at 3 953 feet. The water that is found high on the mountain is crystal clear and is safe for visitors to drink. The varied topography of the area sees to it that the weather remains a comfortable temperature at approximately 73 degrees Fahrenheit. However it can get extremely chilly at night.

The Guilarte Forest Reserve is one of the reserves in Puerto Rico that does not allow camping but does have cabins available to visitors. The cabins have running water, beds and barbeque facilities but there is no electricity. It is advised that visitors make reservations in advance and that they inquire as to what sort of things they need to pack in for a night in the Guilarte State Forest Reserve. The cabins, which can accommodate a maximum of thirty people a night, are situated in the most beautiful and picturesque part of the eucalyptus forest and definitely worth the stay. Visitors will be able to choose from a number of hiking trails that wind through the park and some more challenging than others. Hiking is a wonderful way to enjoy the forest, mountain and the many bird species that live in the reserve. Avid birdwatchers can enjoy searching for the twenty-six bird species that have been recorded in the reserve. The picnic facilities are peaceful and spectacular, and nature lovers will find their experience at the Guilarte Forest Reserve very rewarding and tranquil.
