Home vaccination service
The Department of Health announced on Tuesday, Oct. 27 that it will vaccinate bedridden people against influenza through home visits in the municipalities of Florida and Barceloneta. El Vocero reported the service is coordinated with both towns and targets residents who face difficulties traveling to medical centers.
Secretary of Health Víctor M. Ramos Otero said the program forms part of the initiative “Cerca de ti, cuidando tu salud”. Metro Puerto Rico reported that the secretary cited an estimate of around 16,000 bedridden older adults islandwide. The announcement was made together with Barceloneta Mayor Wanda J. Soler Rosario and Florida Mayor José E. Gerena Polanco.
To request the service, individuals or their relatives must contact the Vaccination Division of the Department of Health at 787-765-2929, extensions 3367 or 3338, according to both outlets. Callers must indicate they are requesting home vaccination for a bedridden person and supply the patient’s information and service address so staff can schedule the visit.

Additional health activities
El Vocero reported that as part of activities planned for this week, the Department of Health will hold a rabies and other disease vaccination clinic for dogs and cats on Friday, Oct. 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Parque Pasivo Jannette González Sánchez in Florida. The event is open to residents of nearby municipalities.
On Saturday, Oct. 31 a medical services and orientation fair will take place at Estadio Sixto Escobar in Barceloneta from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with registration until 1:00 p.m. Metro Puerto Rico reported the fair will offer general medicine, pediatrics, ophthalmology, psychology and other specialties, along with mobile clinics and preventive guidance. Both outlets noted the events respond in part to health data from the Arecibo region.
Where the sources differ
Both El Vocero and Metro Puerto Rico agree on the home influenza vaccination program for bedridden residents of Florida and Barceloneta, the contact phone number and extensions, the estimated 16,000 bedridden older adults, and the dates and venues for the pet vaccination clinic and the medical services fair. El Vocero provides more detail on the BRFSS 2025 health statistics for the Arecibo region that partly motivated the activities, while Metro Puerto Rico gives the full name of the initiative “Cerca de ti, cuidando tu salud.”
What the reports do not say
The reports do not state how many bedridden residents live specifically in Florida and Barceloneta, how many home visits are expected, the exact number of staff involved, or whether the home vaccination service will be expanded to other municipalities after this pilot. They also do not indicate whether the flu vaccine supply is limited or what follow-up care is planned after the home visits.
