Puerto Rico trip checklist
A one-page plan from PuertoRico.com: when to go, getting around, El Yunque, the islands and what to pack.
What's inside
- Before you book: US citizens flying from the mainland do not need a passport. Puerto Rico is a US territory and uses the US dollar.
- Getting around: Outside the San Juan metro area, a rental car is the easiest way to explore. Puerto Rico drives on the right.
- Culebra and Vieques: Ferries leave from the Ceiba Ferry Terminal, about 1 to 1½ hours east of San Juan. There is no ferry from San Juan or Fajardo.
- El Yunque: No reservation needed: the PR-191 entrance is free, first-come, first-served, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arrive early on weekends.
- Health, water and safety: Tap water is treated and safe in most of the island. In a rural guesthouse, ask your host. Follow any boil-water notice.
- Pack: Insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle.
