Collision in Maunabo
A traffic accident involving a 17-year-old driver without a license and a motorcyclist occurred Monday afternoon on PR-901 at kilometer 13.5 in barrio Emajagua, Maunabo, El Nuevo Día reported. According to the preliminary investigation cited by both El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora, the motorcyclist invaded the opposite lane and was struck by a white vehicle driven by the minor.
After the impact the teenager lost control of the car and struck a concrete fence and a parked vehicle at a residence. The 17-year-old was taken to a local hospital where his condition was listed as stable. Police administered a breath test in the presence of his parents that registered 0.00 percent alcohol.
Motorcyclist identified
The motorcyclist was identified as Jonathan López Laboy, 34. He was treated at the scene for blows and trauma and later transferred to a metropolitan-area hospital where his condition was described as grave. A blood test was also performed. The motorcycle, a 2023 Tank 200, carried a plate that did not belong to it and had an expired registration, Primera Hora reported.
During a records check authorities confirmed López Laboy has had an active arrest warrant in Pennsylvania since 2018. The Special Arrests Unit will take custody of him after medical treatment. The reason for the warrant was not disclosed. The case remains under investigation by Agent Víctor Méndez Ramos of Humacao Highway Patrol and prosecutor Alberto Miranda.
Where the sources differ
Both El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora agree on the location, date, time frame, vehicles involved, the minor’s age and lack of license, the motorcyclist’s lack of license and the existence of the Pennsylvania warrant since 2018. El Nuevo Día attributes the lane-invasion finding to the preliminary investigation without naming the motorcyclist at that point. Primera Hora names Jonathan López Laboy earlier in its own voice and separately notes the warrant discovery. Both describe the minor’s post-collision path into the fence and parked car; neither says the motorcycle struck those objects. Primera Hora alone gives the motorcyclist’s full name and describes his final condition as grave.
What the reports do not say
The sources do not state the reason for the 2018 Pennsylvania arrest warrant, the exact medical diagnoses or expected recovery times for either person, whether citations were issued to the minor or the motorcyclist, the identity or ownership of the parked vehicle, or any timeline for when the Special Arrests Unit will assume custody.
