The short version

  • The San Juan Daily Star reported that Aguada Mayor Christian E. Cortés Feliciano distributed $28,000 to 28 fishermen on Thursday
  • Each fisherman submits a list of needed equipment valued at $1,000 which the municipality purchases and delivers directly according to both outlets
  • El Vocero reported the first edition in 2022 benefited 25 fishermen while 30 received support in 2024
  • The incentives complement the separate $2.8 million "El Sueño del Pescador" coastal project the mayor said

Third round of municipal support

Aguada awarded $28,000 in incentives to 28 local fishermen during the third edition of a municipal program, The San Juan Daily Star reported. The initiative, led by Mayor Christian E. Cortés Feliciano, allows each participant to identify equipment needs valued at $1,000, after which the municipality makes the direct purchase and delivers the materials.

The program began in 2022 with 25 fishermen, followed by support for 30 in 2024. This latest round brings the total number of beneficiaries across three editions to 83, according to the mayor's statements in both reports. Equipment acquired has included fishing nets, carts for boats and commercial refrigerators to preserve catches.

Commitment and infrastructure plans

During the event the mayor recalled signing a collaborative agreement with fishermen before taking office. “Antes de ser alcalde me reuní con los pescadores y firmamos un acuerdo colaborativo donde me comprometí con su progreso y desarrollo,” he said, as quoted by El Vocero and The San Juan Daily Star.

Cortés Feliciano also highlighted the $2.8 million “El Sueño del Pescador” project to revitalize three coastal areas in Guaniquilla. The main site, in front of the Cruz de Colón, will include gazebos—one for selling fish—along with potable water, electricity, sidewalks, benches, parking, speed reducers and wireless internet. The plan further encompasses remodeling the Virgen del Carmen monument at La Placita del Pescador and building La Fuente del Pescador with a sculpture honoring the fishing tradition.

Where the sources differ

Both The San Juan Daily Star and El Vocero agree on the $28,000 distributed to 28 fishermen in the third edition, the $1,000 equipment allowance per person, prior editions (25 in 2022 and 30 in 2024), the quoted statements by Mayor Christian E. Cortés Feliciano and the details of the separate $2.8 million “El Sueño del Pescador” project. The San Juan Daily Star published on Oct. 15 while El Vocero published on Oct. 14; the former gives a fuller account of the mayor's remarks while the latter includes a weather note unrelated to the story.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not specify the exact date of the award ceremony beyond the publication days, the names of any attending fishermen, the precise breakdown of equipment requested in this round, the current status or timeline of the $2.8 million construction project, or any measurements of economic impact from the prior two editions of the incentive program.
