Two morning shootings
Police reported two homicides that occurred minutes apart on Monday morning in Guaynabo and Bayamón. El Vocero reported the first at about 7:15 a.m. on Calle Del Parque in barrio Santa Rosa 3, Guaynabo. The victim was identified as José Edgardo Cruz Pérez, 49. According to preliminary information, he stepped onto the balcony of his residence and was shot by individuals who were allegedly lying in wait. Police said assault rifles were used at the scene.
Approximately 10 minutes later, a body with gunshot wounds was found in sector Algarrobo on PR-167 in barrio Dajaos, Bayamón. El Vocero reported the victim had not been identified. El Nuevo Día reported the second case at 7:20 a.m. on the same road in Bayamón. WAPA reported agents from the Bayamón Criminal Investigation Corps responded to both scenes along with the Instituto de Ciencias Forenses.
Holiday weekend total
According to the Police, the two cases bring the total number of homicides reported during the holiday weekend to eight. El Vocero reported this figure. Some outlets initially referred to a possible third killing in Vega Baja but later stated there were no details confirming a body there.
Conflicting details appear across reports. Telemundo Puerto Rico reported different locations for both incidents, while Primera Hora reported three killings and an earlier report of shots at 4:10 a.m. in the Guaynabo case.
Where the sources differ
All sources, including the new Metro Puerto Rico report, agree that two homicides occurred Monday morning minutes apart in the Bayamón police area, one in Guaynabo and one in Bayamón, with the Bayamón CIC investigating. El Vocero names the Guaynabo victim as José Edgardo Cruz Pérez, 49, gives the exact address Calle Del Parque in Santa Rosa 3, describes an ambush on the balcony with assault rifles, and states the weekend total is eight homicides. El Nuevo Día, WAPA and Metro Puerto Rico give times of 7:15/7:20 a.m., note the discovery of bodies with multiple gunshot wounds after calls to police, and mention the Instituto de Ciencias Forenses or Bayamón CIC. Telemundo and Primera Hora reported different locations and times and initially mentioned a third case in Vega Baja that was later walked back by WAPA. Metro Puerto Rico adds that the Dajaos precinct responded to the Bayamón scene and that the circumstances remain under investigation.
What the reports do not say
The reports do not state whether any arrests have been made, the motive for either killing, the identity of the Bayamón victim, or whether the cases are believed to be related. They also do not indicate any update on the total number of homicides for the year or provide further details on the other six weekend killings.
