The short version

  • El Nuevo Día reported that the Cardinals acquired left-hander Eduardo Rivera from the Red Sox on Tuesday
  • El Vocero reported that Boston designated Rivera for assignment after reinstating him from the 60-day injured list
  • Rivera posted a 0-1 record and 6.30 ERA in four MLB appearances with Boston this season according to El Vocero

Trade details

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired Puerto Rican left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, Nov. 3. In exchange, Boston received minor league right-hander Juan Carlos García. El Nuevo Día reported the deal, which was also confirmed by the Cardinals on social media.

Rivera, 23, had been designated for assignment by Boston after being reinstated from the 60-day injured list. The move left him off the team's 40-man roster, El Vocero reported. The Cardinals could have an opening in their 2027 starting rotation, according to Sports Illustrated via El Nuevo Día.

Rivera's 2026 season

Rivera debuted in the majors with the Red Sox in April and made three starts and one relief appearance. He finished with a 0-1 record and 6.30 ERA in 10 innings, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs with 10 strikeouts and six walks, El Vocero reported. His debut on April 22 against the Yankees was scoreless over 3 1/3 innings.

In the minors with Portland (Double-A) and Worcester (Triple-A), Rivera went 7-2 with a 2.59 ERA, striking out 71 in 55 2/3 innings. A lower back strain interrupted his season; Worcester placed him on the injured list in August and Boston transferred him to the 60-day list on Sept. 1, according to El Vocero. Overall he pitched 65 innings across levels, El Nuevo Día reported.

Where the sources differ

Both El Nuevo Día and El Vocero reported the trade of Eduardo Rivera from Boston to St. Louis for Juan Carlos García (named Juan García in one report). They agree on Rivera's age, height, affiliation with Cangrejeros de Santurce and possibility of pitching in the LBPRC season starting Nov. 4. El Vocero provided detailed stats for Rivera's MLB and minor league performance plus injury timeline; El Nuevo Día gave overall innings pitched and noted a possible rotation opening for 2027. El Vocero said García is 18 with a 4.40 ERA in the Dominican Summer League; El Nuevo Día said he is 19 with minor-league experience.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not state how much money is involved in the trade if any, whether Rivera will be added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster immediately, the exact status of his back injury or whether he will be ready for the start of the 2027 MLB season. They also do not specify if the Cardinals have formally announced plans for Rivera in their rotation or bullpen.
