Updated October 12, 2026. Rideshare: Lyft islandwide launch July 8, 2025 (Lyft blog); Lyft PR airports SJU/BQN/PSE/SIG (Lyft Help); Uber SJU 24/7 + Reserve up to 90 days (Uber airport pages); SJU pickup signs (aeropuertosju.com). El Yunque rideshare ban at La Coca / El Portal (USDA Forest Service conditions). Tolls: AutoExpreso prepaid electronic system (Autoridad de Carreteras / DTOP materials). Ferries: use official ATM/ferry booking channels — we do not invent sailing times. App and taxi prices move with demand; no fixed fare table here.
The best way to get around Puerto Rico depends on your base. Metro San Juan can work on foot, rideshare and limited transit. Once you leave the metro — El Yunque, the west coast, Ponce, or the ferry islands — a rental car (or a licensed tour) is usually the reliable plan.
Quick chooser
| Trip style | Usually works best |
|---|---|
| Condado / Old San Juan / Isla Verde days | Walk + Uber/Lyft + tourist taxi stands |
| Airport (SJU) to hotel | Uber/Lyft (follow app pin), tourist taxi, or rental pickup |
| El Yunque day | Rental car or permitted tour — no rideshare pickup at La Coca / El Portal |
| Island road trip / camping | Rental car + AutoExpreso toll product |
| Vieques or Culebra | Ferry or small plane — see ferry hubs; rental cars can't go on the ferry, so rent a car or golf cart on the island |
Rental car
Still the default for multi-town days. Compare the full quote (taxes, airport concession, young-driver fees, toll product), not the headline daily rate. Puerto Rico’s expressway tolls use AutoExpreso, a prepaid electronic tag system — ask the rental desk which toll product is on the car. Details: renting a car in Puerto Rico.
Uber and Lyft
Both apps operate. Lyft announced islandwide service on July 8, 2025. Uber has the longer local history. Driver density is highest in the San Juan metro; outside it, waits grow and return rides from quiet lots are not guaranteed.
SJU: Uber states 24/7 airport availability and Reserve booking up to 90 days ahead. The airport site lists rideshare pickup guidance (Terminal A arrivals; Terminals B/C near columns 16–19). Match plate/photo/name in the app; ignore solicitors inside the terminal. Terminals, official taxi fares and rental desks are in our SJU airport guide.
El Yunque rule: the Forest Service warns that rideshare apps may not use La Coca gate or El Portal as drop-off/pick-up points. Full rideshare FAQ: Does Puerto Rico have Uber and Lyft?
Taxis
Tourist taxi stands at SJU remain useful when your phone has no data. Aeropuertosju.com notes airport tourist taxis use Puerto Rico Tourism Company–regulated fares — ask the dispatcher the price before you load bags, then compare with the app.
Públicos
Shared vans/cars (públicos) still move people between towns along fixed corridors, often from plaza areas. They are cash-oriented, schedule-light, and not a full tourist network. Ask a hotel desk which plaza is active for your route, and do not treat them like timed coach buses.
Inside the metro, AMA bus corridors exist (the airport transport page lists examples such as T5, D53 and E40). Useful if you travel light and are not in a hurry — not a substitute for a west-coast itinerary.
Tren Urbano
The Tren Urbano light-rail line serves parts of the San Juan metro (Bayamón–Santurce corridor context). It helps some commute-style trips; it does not reach Old San Juan’s colonial core, the beaches, or El Yunque. Pair it with walking or a short rideshare for the last mile.
Ferries to Vieques and Culebra
Passenger ferries leave from the Ceiba terminal for both islands. Book through the official ferry / ATM channels and build slack for weather holds — we do not publish a schedule table here because sailings change. Guides: How to get to Vieques · How to get to Culebra. Small-plane options also exist; again, check live inventory.
Can you skip the car entirely?
Yes for a San Juan–centric trip. Old San Juan, Condado, Santurce and Isla Verde are manageable without driving.
Hard without a car (or tour): rainforest trailheads, Cabo Rojo sunsets, Isabela cliff beaches, mountain camping (see camping), and most multi-stop photography days.
FAQ
What is the best way to get around Puerto Rico?
Car for island-wide exploring; rideshare + walking for metro stays.
What is the cheapest way?
Walking, públicos and transit where they fit — at the cost of time and flexibility. Rideshare beats a rental for a few short metro hops; a rental usually wins for full-day circuits.
How do I get from SJU to my hotel?
Follow the Uber/Lyft pin, use the tourist taxi stand, or pick up a prepaid rental. More: Uber & Lyft.
Do I need an AutoExpreso account?
Visitors usually use the rental’s toll product rather than opening a personal resident account.
