Quick answer
SJU is the code for Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, Puerto Rico's main airport. It sits in Carolina, right next to San Juan, and it is open 24 hours a day.
- Terminals: JetBlue uses Terminal A. Most other airlines, including American, Delta, United, Southwest, Spirit and Frontier, are listed in Terminal B.
- Taxis: official tourist-zone fares from the airport are $12 to Isla Verde, $17 to Condado, Ocean Park, Miramar or Santurce, and $21 to Old San Juan, per trip plus listed extras.
- Uber and Lyft: both operate at SJU. Follow the signs to the rideshare pickup areas on the arrivals level.
- Rental cars: about 18 companies are on the airport's official list.
- Leaving: the airport suggests arriving 2 hours early for U.S. flights and 3 for international ones, and every bag going to the mainland passes a USDA check first.
SJU terminals and airlines
The airport's own airline directory assigns carriers to two main check-in areas. Use it as a guide and confirm with your airline before you go, because airlines move gates and some third-party sites show different terminals.
| Terminal | Airlines (official SJU list) |
|---|---|
| Terminal A | JetBlue, Air Sunshine, Tradewind |
| Terminal B | American Airlines, Air Antilles, Avianca, Cape Air, Copa Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Iberia, interCaribbean, Silver, Southwest, Spirit, United, Vieques Air Link |
Air Canada also flies to SJU but has no terminal listed on the airport's page, so check your booking. Terminals B and C share a taxi stand and rideshare zone, and the police lost-and-found office is in Terminal E.
Taxis from SJU: official fares
Tourist taxis wait outside baggage claim, and their fares are set and approved by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. There are two stands:
- Main stand, Terminal A arrivals level: serves passengers coming out of Terminal A baggage claim.
- Terminal B arrivals level: serves passengers from Terminals B and C.
The airport's fare sheet lists these fixed fares from the airport to the main tourist zones:
| Destination zone | Fixed fare from SJU |
|---|---|
| Isla Verde | $12 |
| Santurce, Condado, Miramar or Ocean Park | $17 |
| Convention Center area and Isla Grande | $17 |
| Old San Juan and the cruise piers | $21 |
How the fares work, per the same sheet:
- The price is per trip, not per person.
- Extra charges apply for additional bags, a sixth or seventh passenger, rides between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and the airport fee. Mobility aids for people with disabilities ride free.
- Tolls and tips are not included.
- Trips to places between or beyond the tourist zones, including other parts of San Juan, run on the meter.
Confirm the total with the dispatcher before the driver loads your bags. If you are staying near the airport, browse our San Juan places to stay or the Isla Verde guide.
Uber and Lyft at SJU
Both apps pick up at the airport.
- Uber: the airport's transportation page lists Uber pickup areas at Terminal A and at Terminals B and C (columns 16–19). Uber says it runs at SJU 24/7, warns that waits can be longer for very early or late flights, and lets you book up to 90 days ahead with Uber Reserve.
- Lyft: Lyft has operated across Puerto Rico since July 8, 2025. Its help center sends SJU pickups to the designated rideshare spots on the arrivals (ground) level at Terminals A and D, and drop-offs to the departures curb on level 2. The app moves your pin to an approved spot.
The airport's own page still describes Uber as the only rideshare option, which is out of date. For prices, wait times and where rideshare is not allowed, see does Puerto Rico have Uber and Lyft?
Public bus (AMA)
Public buses are the cheapest way out, if you travel light. The airport lists three bus stops on the second level (departures) at Terminals A, D and E, with these routes:
- Isla Verde: T5 or D53
- Condado (Ashford Avenue): D53
- Old San Juan: T5 or D53
- Convention Center: D53
- Avenida Piñero: E40
Renting a car at SJU
A car is the easiest way to see the island beyond San Juan. The airport's rental page lists these companies: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Alamo, National, Thrifty, Hertz, Charlie Car Rental, Sixt, Cabrera Car & Truck Rental, Target Rent a Car, Allied/EZ Car Rental, Popular Auto Rentals, Europcar, U-Save, Dollar, Payless and Easeway. Check your confirmation for where to meet the company, since pickup points differ.
Two local companies on that list have cards in our directory: Charlie Car Rental and Target Rent a Car. Browse more in our San Juan services directory, and read renting a car in Puerto Rico for tolls, insurance and driving tips. If you run a rental company and your business is listed, you can claim it with a free account; if it is missing, you can add your business.
Parking at SJU
- The airport runs parking that is open 24 hours a day, every day, and asks drivers to plan ahead because demand is high.
- The Park & Ride at the Mall of San Juan can be reserved online or in the JustPark app. A shuttle bus takes you to the terminals. JustPark adds a 5% service fee and a $0.65 transaction fee, and you can cancel for free up to 24 hours before your start time.
- Weekends are busy, so leave extra time to park and catch the shuttle.
Flying out of SJU
- When to arrive: the airport's FAQ says at least 2 hours before domestic flights (including the U.S. mainland) and 3 hours before international flights. Its parking page suggests 2½ hours in busy periods.
- USDA inspection first: every bag on a flight from Puerto Rico to the mainland must be inspected by USDA officers, who sit at the entrance to each terminal. The airport lists items allowed after inspection, such as citrus, shelled or frozen gandules, plantains and bananas, and pork products like pasteles and ham. Lists can change, so check before you pack food.
- ID: TSA wants a REAL ID-compliant license, a passport or another accepted ID from every adult. See do you need a passport to go to Puerto Rico?
Services inside the airport
- Porters: available 24/7 at terminal entrances and in arrivals and baggage claim. The service is free; the suggested tip is $2 per bag. The same cooperative also stores luggage.
- Money: a Banco Popular branch exchanges dollars and euros, and the airport lists ATMs across the terminals.
- Lost and found: items found in common areas go to Puerto Rico Police Precinct 216 on the Terminal E arrivals level. For items left on a plane, contact your airline.
- Duty-free: the airport says there are duty-free shops in every terminal.
Other airports in Puerto Rico
SJU handles most visitors, but Lyft's airport list shows the island's other main commercial airports: Rafael Hernández (BQN) in Aguadilla on the west coast, Mercedita (PSE) in Ponce on the south coast, and Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci (SIG) at Isla Grande in San Juan.
