Career in Spanish basketball

Ortiz left a significant mark in Spain’s Liga ACB with clubs including CAI Zaragoza, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona — where he won the 1991 Copa del Rey and was a European runner-up — Festina Andorra and Unicaja Málaga, El Nuevo Día reported. Primera Hora added that he also played 63 games over two seasons with the Utah Jazz in the NBA and represented Puerto Rico in four Olympics: Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004.

FEB president Elisa Aguilar said Ortiz “left an indelible mark on Spanish basketball,” Primera Hora reported. Former teammate Alfonso Reyes recalled him as someone who “illuminated any place he was in” and was “much better off the court than on it.” Diario AS director José Félix Díaz said he was especially moved by the response from all the teams Ortiz played for after his death.

Where the sources differ

Both El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora agree on the date and location of the induction, Ortiz’s death on May 5 at age 62, the presence of widow Sylvia Ríos, and his clubs in the ACB league. El Nuevo Día includes a longer quote from Ríos on social media and notes his prior 2019 FIBA Hall of Fame induction. Primera Hora adds quotes from FEB president Elisa Aguilar, Alfonso Reyes and José Félix Díaz, plus details on other 2026 inductees and Ortiz’s Olympic appearances and NBA stint. The sources differ slightly on the exact phrasing of Ríos’s remarks at the event.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not state the exact number of games Ortiz played in the ACB, his statistical achievements in Spain, or any plans for further posthumous recognitions in Puerto Rico. They also do not detail the full list of his international titles with the Puerto Rican national team or any specific comments from Puerto Rican basketball officials on the induction.
