Reforestation event

Para la Naturaleza has invited the public to take part in the Día de La Siembra on Saturday, Oct. 24, an island-wide reforestation day aimed at planting more than 40,000 trees that the organization distributed during October. Metro Puerto Rico reported. The call is directed at individuals, families, schools and community groups, especially those who received trees but have not yet planted them, according to the organization.

Fernando Lloveras San Miguel, president of Para la Naturaleza, said in a written statement that the response to the distribution confirmed a genuine commitment to restoring natural systems. Both Metro Puerto Rico and NotiCel reported that the trees are native, endemic and fruit species produced in the organization's nurseries with the goal of increasing forest cover.

Temperature reduction and collaboration

As part of the educational campaign La Siembra, the Siembra Sombra initiative promotes planting to lower temperatures in developed areas. The organization stated that trees can help reduce temperatures by up to 10 degrees in the places where they are planted, Metro Puerto Rico reported.

The distribution and planting effort has received support from community and environmental groups, educational institutions, private companies and several municipalities. NotiCel listed the participating towns as Ponce, Juana Díaz, Caguas, Bayamón, Fajardo, Humacao, Luquillo, Manatí, Río Grande, Yabucoa and San Juan.

How to participate and document

People interested in joining can plant trees individually or in groups. Participants are encouraged to share photos and videos on social media using the tag @paralanaturaleza and to record each tree on the campaign's digital map. The platform provides videos and recommendations on proper planting and care techniques, according to Metro Puerto Rico.

Further information and registration are available at pln.org/lasiembra, both outlets reported.

Where the sources differ

Metro Puerto Rico and NotiCel agree on all core facts, including the Oct. 24 planting date, the distribution of more than 40,000 trees in October, the quote from Fernando Lloveras San Miguel, the temperature-reduction claim of up to 10 degrees, the list of collaborating municipalities and the registration website. The two reports are nearly identical in content and wording; no numerical, factual or interpretive differences appear between them.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not state how many of the 40,000 trees have already been planted, whether a specific target number of new plantings is expected on Oct. 24, the exact number of trees distributed in each municipality, or any details about funding sources for the campaign. They also do not mention any government agency involvement beyond the listed municipalities or any plans for follow-up survival monitoring of the trees.
