Response to violence and drug disputes
Superintendent Joseph González told Metro Puerto Rico the operation responds to concerns brought by residents about shootings during the night and early morning hours, the sale of controlled substances and violent crimes in the municipality. He said residents have not remained silent and that police have also seen images of shootings on social media.
González stated there is a war between different groups in the municipality for control of drug points. The operation includes agents from the Drugs, Arrests and Intelligence divisions, the Fuerza Unida de Rápida Acción and personnel from the local district. It has also extended to vacant apartments in coordination with the Public Housing Administration, where some people living there illegally have been detained.
Where the sources differ
Both Metro Puerto Rico and Telemundo Puerto Rico reported an operation involving more than 200 agents in the same three Cayey housing complexes and both reported three arrests by mid-morning. Metro Puerto Rico attributed the operation to resident complaints of shootings, drug sales and violent crime and quoted Superintendent Joseph González saying the violence stems from rival groups fighting for drug-point control; it also reported seizures of vehicles with visible firearms and the arrest of a Pennsylvania fugitive. Telemundo Puerto Rico mentioned recent violence including multiple shootings and an armed assault on a mail carrier weeks earlier in Brisas de Cayey and reported two of the arrests were for alleged apartment usurpation in Luis Muñoz Morales. The outlets differ on which arrest details each highlighted.
What the reports do not say
The reports do not state the identities or ages of those arrested, the exact charges against the third person, whether any weapons or drugs were seized beyond those seen in vehicles, the number of vacant apartments inspected, or how long the police presence will continue beyond González saying it will last as long as necessary. No information is given on whether the operation has reduced crime or led to additional warrants.
