The short version

  • Metro Puerto Rico reports the Hospital Municipal de San Juan earned high performer status in leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma for the 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Procedures and Conditions category
  • El Vocero reports the recognition is based on patient survival rates, home recovery, patient volume and specialized cancer accreditation

Second consecutive high performer award

The Hospital Municipal de San Juan received recognition from U.S. News & World Report as a high-performing hospital in the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Metro Puerto Rico reported the distinction is part of the 2026-2027 Best Hospitals edition in the Procedures and Conditions category. The hospital earned the same recognition the previous year.

According to both outlets, the evaluation considered more than 4,400 hospitals across 15 adult specialties and 22 procedures and conditions. El Vocero reported that approximately one third of the evaluated institutions received some form of recognition. The assessment used objective measures including risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications, nursing care levels, patient survival, home recovery, patient volume and specialized cancer accreditation. U.S. News drew on more than 800 million patient records.

Officials highlight clinical results

San Juan Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo stated through written remarks that receiving the recognition for a second consecutive year is a source of pride for the city. He attributed the result to the work of health professionals who handle patients' health and well-being daily. Romero Lugo added that the municipality has continued strengthening its health system by investing in resources and supporting a committed team.

Dr. Luis Class, director of the San Juan Municipal Health System, said the distinction relates to clinical outcomes and the quality of care patients receive. He noted that the hospital has multidisciplinary teams working in a coordinated manner, following rigorous protocols and making decisions focused on each patient's particular needs. Class indicated the recognition validates that clinical work and commits the institution to continue strengthening care standards.

Where the sources differ

Both Metro Puerto Rico and El Vocero agree that the Hospital Municipal de San Juan was recognized for the second year in a row by U.S. News & World Report in the 2026-2027 Best Hospitals edition for high performance in leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma care. They report the same evaluation criteria, the number of hospitals assessed (more than 4,400) and that roughly one third received recognition. Metro Puerto Rico states 'only one third' while El Vocero says 'approximately one third.' Both quote Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo and Dr. Luis Class using nearly identical language on pride in the staff, investment in the health system, multidisciplinary teams and commitment to standards. No major factual conflicts appear between the two reports.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not provide specific survival rates, patient volumes or complication statistics that led to the high-performer rating. They do not state how the Hospital Municipal compared with other Puerto Rico or U.S. hospitals in the same categories, whether any other local facilities received similar recognition, or what concrete steps the municipality plans to take next to maintain or improve the rating.
