These ancient rock formations, dating back over 11 million years ago, are formed by geological processes in the southern karstic strip at Punta Guaniquilla Nature Reserve.

Dry woods, grasslands, meadows, mangroves, and the majestic Guaniquilla Lagoon dominate this reserve.

The lagoon serves as an essential sanctuary for migratory birds, both locally and nationally protected, that flock to the area each winter, some traveling all the way from the Canadian Tundra.

Three locations in the Reserve bear the name “Guaniquilla”.

There’s the tallest peak in the region, Cerro Guaniquilla. Then you have Laguna Guaniquilla, which is the biggest lagoon. Finally, you have punta Guaniquilla, which is located in the southern peninsula of Punta Guaniquilla.

This reserve protects roughly 450 acres of subtropical dry forest, home to various habitats for animals, limestone formations, and two cave systems.
