About
Castillo San Cristóbal is a historic fortress located in San Juan Antiguo, San Juan. The site forms part of the San Juan National Historic Site and consists of a three-level fortification with outer defenses. Construction followed attacks on the city in 1598 and 1625, which led to the extension of city walls, addition of a sentry box known as Garita del Diablo, and an artillery platform on San Cristóbal hill. The fort was built to defend San Juan from land attacks coming from the east. It is recognized as the largest fortress constructed in the Americas. The site operates daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and accepts credit cards, debit cards, and NFC payments.
