About
El Faro de Rincón is a historic landmark located in the Puntas neighborhood of Rincón. The structure was originally built in 1892 to fill the gap between the lighthouses at Punta Borinquen and Cabo Rojo. It sits near the Bonus Plant along Carr. 413. The lighthouse was damaged by an earthquake in 1918 and rebuilt in 1921 by the Coast Guard. It was destroyed again in 1931 and rebuilt once more. Originally known as Faro de Punta Higüero, the name changed to Faro de Punta Higüera in 1953. The light source evolved from candles to oil and later to batteries in 1959. In 1993 it was restored and turned into a passive park that includes a maritime museum, cafeteria, bohíos, and an observation area for viewing whales and Isla Desecheo. The site remains open 24 hours every day.
