Quick answer
- What it is: Río Grande is the town on Puerto Rico's northeast coast that holds the PR-191 entrance to El Yunque National Forest and several major beach resorts.
- El Yunque entry: the Forest Service says entry to the recreation corridor on PR-191 North is free, no reservation is required, and the corridor is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitor numbers are managed because of limited parking and construction.
- Still closed: La Mina Trail, Big Tree Trail and the Baño de Oro Trail (closed for construction). Part of the El Yunque Peak trail is closed too.
- Beyond the forest: a river boat tour, a zipline, a night walk with a permitted guide, and a coast with resort restaurants and local places to eat.
- Rideshare warning: the Forest Service says La Coca gate and El Portal are not rideshare pick-up points. Plan a ride out before you go in.

1. El Yunque National Forest
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. national forest system. It covers nearly 29,000 acres across eight municipalities, including Río Grande and Luquillo. Our El Yunque guide has the full trail list; this is what matters for a day from Río Grande.
- Entry: free for the recreation corridor on PR-191 North, with no reservation. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and parking is allowed only in designated areas.
- El Portal Rainforest Center: open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Three Kings Day, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Forest Service lists an entrance fee of $8 for visitors over 16; children 15 and under are free, and interagency pass holders pay $4. El Portal also closes for about two weeks each September for maintenance (this year, Sept 8 to 20).
- Closed trails: the Forest Service says La Mina Trail and Big Tree Trail remain closed. The Baño de Oro Trail is closed for construction. The El Yunque Trail is open to Los Picachos but closed between the Los Picachos spur and El Yunque Peak because of a damaged retaining wall.
- Proposed fees: on May 6, 2026 the Forest Service proposed new recreation fees at El Portal and La Mina. It was a proposal; check the conditions page before you go.
- Getting out: La Coca gate and El Portal are not authorized rideshare pick-up points, and the Forest Service says visitors have been left walking for hours. Use a rental car, a taxi or an authorized tour.
Check the Forest Service's current conditions page the day you go. For waterfalls elsewhere on the island, see Puerto Rico waterfalls.
2. A boat tour on the Río Espíritu Santo
La Paseadora runs the Original Boat Tour through a nature reserve: mangroves, giant bamboo and wildlife such as iguanas, turtles and waterfowl, with views of El Yunque and the Atlantic. The tour lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, takes up to 15 people, and costs $25 for adults (13 and up) and $20 for children 3 to 12. The meeting point is km 26 on PR-3; call (787) 612-3075.
