Zayra – Reaching For the Stars
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the picturesque coastal town of Arroyo, Zayra Alvarez displayed a love of music and dance from a young age, participating in talent shows and school plays. Zayra later moved to Texas, USA, where she became active in the club scene. Upon signing a record deal with Brando Records, Zayra recorded her Spanish debut album, Ruleta, for which she wrote and recorded all the songs, working with producer Javier Willis. Her song Hoy, released by Sony Norte, received airplay on radio stations throughout Puerto Rico, as well as in the United States, leading to the release of a second single, Cada Momento.
While touring through Texas, Zayra became friendly with the members of Texan rock band Blue October, and was invited to sing on two of their songs – Come in Closer and Into the Ocean. Other achievements of this energetic entertainer included starring in an independent film Lycanthrope, featuring her original song This is Love, and appearing on the 2006 CBS TV show Rock Star Supernova. It was this reality television show that really put Zayra in the spotlight, with audiences and the media either loving or loathing her, but none remaining indifferent to her way-out image and unique take on the songs she chose to perform. On week 7 of the series, instead of covering a well-known song, Zayra decided to perform one of her original songs, Lluvia de Mar, in Spanish – the first time a Spanish song had been performed on the show. Although it was fairly well received, she was told by the judges to stick to more traditional rock songs.
Although she never made it to the finals of Rock Star Supernova, Zayra had been noticed, and her musical career had received a boost. She decided to take her style in a new direction and in September 2010 Zayra’s album Baby Likes to Bang was released by Brando Records. Clearly in the realms of dance music, the album features remixes by top DJs and has already seen the release of two singles – V.I.P. and Baby Likes to Bang. In her promotional tour for the album, Zayra has given performances in Los Angeles and New York, as well as appearing at the Austin Fashion Week and the Atlanta Pride 2010 Festival. It seems Zayra may be a Supernova after all.
